Talibe is an Arabic term for disciple.Qur’ānic schools known as Daaras are no more than fragile buildings where atrocities are committed to children between 5 and 15 years old who are further forced to beg in the streets for more than 8 hours a day.The number of Talibés is increasing. In Castro Laboreiro, an ancient tradition holds on with the ups and downs in the mountain slopes. Up in the “Brandas” high lands and down to the “Inverneiras” low lands, the “Castrejos” spend a stretch of the year in different altitudes to escape the winter cold or the hot summer. In spite of being the second largest of Guinea-Bissau, Bafatá region has the highest levels of poverty. These photographs are the result of a month-stay, living with the inhabitants in crowded, populated places and in the utmost remote villages. ´Lab In Dança´ is a social, inclusion-by-art project run by Santa Maria da Feira city council. It sets out to use dance as a way to help individuals strive and aims for social inclusion of people with physical or mental disabilities. The outlook is to mingle ‘difference’ as an artistic object. A United Nations 2005 report estimated that around 4,000 people will die in the next years from diseases linked to the radiation released in the Chernobyl Nuclear disaster. However, poverty and isolation to which the region was condemned are two key problems faced by the inhabitants.
